Our house had been listed online for less than two hours when my phone rang. Following my usual custom, I stared at the caller’s number waiting for it to go to voicemail.

“I don’t know who that is.” I told my son.

wait, aren’t you selling the house?”

I paused the knife cutting into the birthday pie. “Oh, yeah. I forgot.”

She was interested in looking at the house immediately.

I prefer planning things way ahead, but I understand that once someone lists their house for sale, the impression is that they’re planning on showing it.

We scheduled her to stop by the following afternoon. This gave me about 24 hours to prepare.

She showed up at the door 15 minutes early. Luckily, although sweaty and out of breath, the house and I were pretty much ready.

She was around my age, dressed with style and flair. At first I felt like I had the advantage, having looked her up on LinkedIn, but she was the one in my space, looking at my stuff, so…

We both had an awkward flavor going on, there’s no denying it. She had a paper of questions, her security prop. I had the mental capacity to refrain…
